304 Stainless Steel Round Bars
Because of the presence of sulfur in the steel composition, Stainless Steel 304 was specifically engineered to improve mechanical and corrosion resistance. Stainless Steel 304 Round Bar is an austenitic, non-magnetic stainless steel that cannot be hardened by heat treatment. It’s a free-machining version of the basic 18% Chromium/8% Nickel Stainless Steel.
When exposed to temperatures up to 760°C for short periods of time, grade 304 stainless steel resists oxidation well. In continuous use at 870°C, it also possesses good oxidation resistance. Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 304 have a tensile strength of psi 85,000 and the yield strength psi-45,000 with elongation of 50%. This is not recommended, however, because 304 is susceptible to carbide precipitation when used continuously at 425-860°C. Rapid cooling following heating to 1010-1120°C can be used for solution treatment or annealing. The cold workability of Type 304 is limited. Although some cold working is possible, abrupt bending should be avoided. Fabrication procedures that require hot working, such as forging, should take place after uniform heating to 1149-1260°C. To guarantee maximum corrosion resistance, the produced components should be immediately chilled. The cutting edges must remain razor-sharp. Excessive work hardening is caused by dull edges.
Light cuts should be made, but they should be deep enough to prevent work hardening by riding on the material’s surface. Chip breakers should be used to help keep the swarf from getting into the job. Heat concentrates at the cutting edges due to austenitic metals’ low thermal conductivity. Coolants and lubricants are therefore required and must be used in huge quantities.
